PRESCRIPTION DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT
Understanding Prescription Drug Misuse and Addiction
Prescription drug addiction can involve taking medication in a way other than prescribed, or using someone else’s medication. Addiction to prescription drugs is characterized by a number of traits, but one of the most prominent is continuing use despite consequences.
Prescription drug misuse in teens with mental health disorders is more common than many realize. It evolves into addiction when the pursuit of a high outweighs any concerns about consequences, even after those consequence have come to pass repeatedly.
As a dual-diagnosis mental health program for adolescents, we understand how untreated or undertreated mental health disorders can lead teens to ‘self-medicate’ with substances. Our program is primarily focused on mental health, but we offer thorough support for prescription drug addiction as it may co-occur with conditions like depression or anxiety.
WHEN SUPPORT MAY HELP
When Prescription Drug Use Becomes Misuse.
Treatment for prescription drug use is appropriate when medications are being misused without a prescription or not taken as prescribed. Misuse of prescription medications like opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines or even ADHD medications like Adderall can evolve quickly.
Oftentimes it begins with innocent use of a medication as prescribed. After a time, tolerance may lead your teenager to take more of a medication than prescribed or they may misuse their medication recreationally, or to ‘self-medicate’ the symptoms of a co-occurring mental health condition like depression or anxiety.
Signs It May Be Time for Support
- Taking medication differently than prescribed
- Using medication obtained from other people or sources
- Repeated attempts to cut back or quit that do not last
- Using medication to manage stress, energy, sleep, or mood
- Needing more to get the same effect (tolerance)
- Running out of medication early and/or withdrawal symptoms
INDIVIDUALIZED CARE for Adolescents
Treatment Starts With Understanding Your Teen’s Needs.
Prescription drug treatment begins with careful assessment of your teenager’s situation. We look at everything from co-occurring mental health conditions, to past treatment history and present circumstances. What we learn from you, and the evaluation with your child helps form the basis for their treatment plan moving forward. Therapeutic care can then address emotional health, relapse prevention, relationships, and practical planning for structure and support after treatment at Hidden Book Academy is completed.
Dual-Diagnosis Treatment
Prescription Drug Misuse and Mental Health Disorders
Prescription medication misuse or addiction often exists alongside the symptoms the medication was originally intended to address. Teens may also misuse prescription drugs in an attempt to ‘self-medicate’ the symptoms of other conditions, like depression, anxiety or trauma disorders which may have not yet been diagnosed.
We plan your child’s treatment with all of these factors in mind. Recovery does not mean leaving pain, anxiety, sleep problems, or emotional distress untreated. A dual-diagnosis that includes prescription drug addiction simply needs an appropriate care plan that

What Parents Want to Know About Teens and Prescription Drug Use
Do different prescription drugs require different treatment considerations?
Yes, different medication classes carry different risks, so treatment is tailored to the specific medication involved. In some case, a higher level of care like medical detox may be required before a teen can begin treatment at Hidden Brook Academy.
How do I know whether prescription drug treatment is appropriate?
A clinical assessment reviews use patterns, safety, and history to help us recommend care. If your teen is misusing prescription drugs and it is affecting their safety, mood or functioning, then treatment is usually a practical next step.
Can treatment address pain, anxiety, ADHD, or sleep concerns too?
Yes, underlying concerns are assessed and addressed alongside medication use. Effective non-pharmaceutical and non-narcotic solutions exist for most concerns.
How can family or support systems be involved?
Families stay involved through clinician communication and coordinated planning whenever clinically appropriate.
Does insurance cover prescription drug treatment?
Yes, most insurance plans cover both mental health and substance use disorder treatment, by law. Our team verifies benefits and explains coverage before treatment begins.
What happens after prescription drug treatment?
Your teen will follow the discharge and aftercare plan that is prepared just for them during the course of their treatment. These plans may include recommendations, referrals and concrete suggestions to help your child continue their progress.
