It happens the moment you decide you’re worth the journey.

INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT for Teens in NJ

What Is a Teen Intensive Outpatient Program?

A Teen Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured level of care for adolescents who may need more help than conventional weekly therapy sessions provide. IOP is also a ‘step down’ for teens who have completed more intensive treatment.

The adolescent mental health IOP at Hidden Brook treats conditions like anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders, including co-occurring disorders. IOP care is half-day treatment, delivered three days a week for about three hours per day (~9 hours a week).

PART-TIME TEEN TREATMENT

Mental Health IOP for Adolescents.

Hidden Brook’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for teens in New Jersey is positioned between PHP mental health treatment and conventional weekly therapy sessions. IOP is a popular choice for adolescents with mental health disorders because it offers substantially greater support than weekly therapy sessions, but still leaves time for school and other responsibilities.

Mental Health IOP Can Be a Good Fit For Teens Who:

  • Live with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health challenges
  • Have completed PHP, or did not require full-day treatment
  • Aren’t making the changes they’d hoped for in weekly therapy
  • Do not have a mental health diagnosis yet, but have symptoms that affect quality of life

More Support for Your Teen

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough.

Intensive Outpatient care for teens provides a much higher level of support than hourly sessions with a therapist or counselor. It can be a powerful option for moving forward when your teen’s mental health treatment progress has plateaued.

If your teenager isn’t making headway in outpatient counseling, an IOP program can offer enough additional help to reach that elusive breakthrough moment that turns the tide.

Help That FitS

Treatment With More Room for Everyday Life.

Our mental health IOP for adolescents offers comprehensive support while remaining a part-time care commitment. This means it allows more space for school and life outside of treatment.

This unique combination of characteristics makes IOP a useful option for teenagers who need mental health support, but may not require the full-time schedule of PHP treatment. Our adolescent IOP is a natural step forward after our Partial Hospitalization Program has been completed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Parents Ask About Adolescent IOP

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is part-time, three days a week for about 3 hours each day. This leaves more room for school and other responsibilities. Our PHP, also called partial care, is full-time day treatment offered five days a week. PHP is appropriate for teens who need more help at first than IOP provides

How do I know whether IOP is the right level of care?

A clinical assessment reviews current stability, symptoms, and support needs to recommend the appropriate level of care.

Does IOP include therapy?

Yes, individual and group therapeutic support are core parts of IOP.

Can IOP address both mental health and substance use concerns?

We do treat co-occurring substance use disorders at Hidden Brook, provided the mental health diagnosis is primary, they do not require a medical detox or residential treatment and are clinically appropriate for our program. Mental health and substance use care is coordinated as one connected treatment plan.

Can my teen continue with school or work while enrolled in IOP?

Usually, yes. IOP treatment is designed to fit inside your teen's life with fewer compromises than higher levels of care demand. That said, their mental health always takes priority at Hidden Brook. But work or school on a reduced schedule is often possible while in IOP treatment. We recommend following our clinical recommendations when it comes to your teen's treatment and outside life.

What happens after IOP?

We help connect you with standard outpatient care or continuing-care and recovery supports as appropriate.
